A Study of transmission of Leprosy Infection to House-hold Contacts

Abstract
|
|
|
For the purpose of evaluating the transmission of leprosy to house-hold contacts, a -study was carried out on contacts of leprosy patient, living in Wolsung-Kun, Kyungsang Pook-do and results are summarized below:
1. Number of leprosy patient in Wolsung-Kun were 490, of them 338 (69%) were male cases and 152 (31 %) female cases.
2. Classifying as per type of disease, 103(21%) cases were Indeterminate group, 268 (55 %) cases Tuberculoid type and 119 (24 %) cases Lepromatous type.
3. Out of 959 contacts below 15 years of age, 5 (0.5 %) developed leprosy and out of 1251 contacts above 15 years of age, 42´ (3.36 %) developed leprosy. Total of both is 2,210 of whom 47 developed leprosy. The attack rate is 2.12?/6.
At the time the study was carried out, 7 patients who had infected 10 out of 47 cases among contacts were dead. The type of disease of the source case was therefore known only of the source cases of 37 cases among contacts. From among 493 contacts of Indeterminate group 4(0.8%) developed leprosy cases, from among 1, 175 contacts of Tuberculoid type 17 (1.43%) and from among 532 contacts of Lepromatous type 16 (3.00%)
cases.
4.A detailed survey of the source of infection for the house-hold contact revealed that;

The number of house-hold contact who acquired disease from_ source case was 47 giving an attack rate of 2.12%. Duration of contact varied from 1 year to 30 years
with an average of 10 years.
5. Four new patients were detected by re-examination of contact after 2 years of mass survey.
